PRISM's Unconscious Bias Training

We all use our individual frame of references and filters based on our upbringing, experience and values to make sense of and decisions in a very complex, fast moving world...this is normal human behavior.

We may tend to favor a fellow graduate of our alma mater, prefer those with a similar DISC or Myers-Briggs score, or choose to associate with those who dress, talk, act or look like us. These are some examples of unconscious bias.

However, on the job, these unconscious bias can affect hiring, assignments, promotions, evaluations, dismissals, customer service, sales, revenue, profits and in healthcare - patient care and safety.

Multiply unconscious bias interactions by the number of leaders, managers, supervisors, customer service reps, sales reps and care givers in the organization and you have a multiplier impact upon the organization that can skew its purpose and direction.

So when we think about the people we interact with in the jobs we do everyday...

  • What can we do to avoid the negative impact or consequences?
  • How can we become more self aware and learn to manage our filters?
  • Why aren’t we more inclusive?
  • How can we make the Unconscious Conscious?
  • Can we really override our biases and rewire our brain?

Overriding and Rewiring

We can only override and rewire by being aware of what biases we have and how strong they are...and then making conscious choices and decisions between our preferences and our agreed upon requirements.

For example, if we have a goal to provide outstanding care to each person, then that goal or personal requirement can override our bias and allow us to begin the rewiring process...if we are consciously aware!

To become personally conscious and aware ask yourself these 2 questions:

  1. Is what I am thinking or feeling an initial people personal preference or an overriding agreed up personal or organizational value, policy, job requirement?
  2. What is my intent or goal in this situation? What behaviors and words can I choose that will align my intent with the impact or the outcome on my co-worker, patient, on the hospital, community, on our goals, mission, etc.?

What is Unconscious Bias?

Some Psychologists and others believe that our unconscious biases are simply our natural people preferences.

Many say that we are hardwired to prefer people who look like us, sound like us and share our interests. In fact, we can rapidly sort people into groups and categories! This preference sorting by categories can bypass our normal, rational and logical thinking and lead to poor decision making about any number of things...such as decisions about hiring, providing care, providing feedback and coaching, welcoming new comers to our team, etc.
